Thank you for entering Potomac Valley Track Club's Young Flyers youth track & field training program.
Our first session is this Sunday, October 8, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Registration is open at www.pvtc.org/youth, and we welcome additional athletes to join us.
We meet inside Door #12, the main entrance in front of Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 2nd Street South, Arlington VA 22204. We meet in the same place each Sunday from now through December 10.
Please arrive around 2:50 PM. For every pre-registered young athlete and coach, we have a pre-printed name tag. Please find your young athlete's name tag and pin it on so we know everyone's name.

PVTC reimburses its coaches' $30 USATF membership and $16 background screening. Then at your convenience, complete USATF's free SafeSport program.
If your high-school-age student wants to serve as an assistant coach, please fill out the form above. No USATF membership, background screen, or SafeSport is required for assistant coaches. At the end of the season, we present letters of recommendation to our assistant coaches, and we gladly support applications for college and for jobs.
On the Sundays in October, we meet inside, then we use both the indoor track and the lovely half-mile outdoor trail. Please dress for the weather. On the Sundays in November, we make a game-day decision whether we can go outside.
After you get your name tag, form a circle on the inside of the indoor track so we can lead the young athletes in a warm-up, including stretching, strengthening, and dynamics starting at 3:00 PM sharp.
At about 3:20 PM, we break into three groups:
o K-1st-2nd graders go with coach Betsy Peace for sprint training
o 3rd-4th-5th graders stay with me for middle distance training
o 6th-7th-8th graders go with coach Jim Darr for long-distance training
o Race walkers go with the week's race-walk coach.
Later in the season, we add advanced sprint and advanced long distance for all ages as specialized training.
At 4:00 PM, we re-convene and then subdivide into electives -- sprint, distance, race walk, and throws, with a coach for each.
At 4:30 PM, we re-group into four-person relay teams.
o Outdoors, we practice shuttle relay
o Indoors, we practice 4x200m relay
Every week at 4:55 PM, we provide refreshments. We currently have 33 young athletes signed up, so 33 bananas, 33 juice boxes, and 33 energy bars is a typical order.
Post-workout refreshments on our first Sunday are sponsored by Trader Joe's of Clarendon, 1109 North Highland Street, Arlington VA 22201, and Michelle and Steve Neff will pick up the goodies for this Sunday's workout.
Refreshments on the subsequent Sundays are provided by parents of athletes, and I encourage you to shop at Trader Joe's in Arlington or near your home. I shall publish the list of families and their refreshment dates in my next message.
Later in the season, we provide Young Flyers t-shirts in each athlete's size. Extra t-shirts for parents are $10, free to coaches.
For the first 4 Sundays in October, as we warm up, I present a prepared five-minute lecture about an aspect of training:
o October 8 - Equipment
o October 15 - Planning your training cycle
o October 22 - Flexibility, physiology, and competitive theory
o October 29 - Pre-Hallowe'en Nutrition and Health
We invite parents and other coaches who have expertise in an area of training to present five-minute prepared lectures on the Sundays in November. We've had speakers in the past about posture / alignment, allergies, and national programs like Junior Olympics.
We want the parents to be involved. Besides prepared lectures, please join us running with the young athletes, and please help us with administration of the program. In particular, I need one parent to help distribute name tags and collect any new registrations this Sunday, October 8, and thereafter.
Note: I shall be absent on Sunday, November 4, as I shall run New York City Marathon. The other coaches will lead the workout on that day.
