Thank you for joining PVTC's Young Flyers youth track & field training program!
Complete results of our track & field meet yesterday are now up'n'running at
We have only one unclaimed time in the 55-meter -- 13.45 seconds. Please let me know if that time belongs to your young athlete, so I can correct the results. Just one missing bib number -- that's a new record low -- and I thank all the moms and dads who volunteered to make our meet -- and our whole season -- so successful.
Let me share with you that I grew up in Chicago in the 1950s, and we had bullies, we had intolerance, we had indifferent teachers and principals.
Now we live in a much better world, and our track & field program was a microcosm of the world. We had athletes in the program from families from all over the world, but throughout this season, everyone treated each other with great respect and admiration. Our parents -- and our teachers and principals -- really care about each individual student.
I hope your young athlete came through the program with more than a love of running, race walking, and throwing (with an occasional jump) but also an abiding love of others. What a great way to begin this beautiful holiday season!
If you didn't receive your certificate of completion, I plan to mail the unclaimed certificates later this week.
Wait, there's more!
Potomac Valley Track Club conducts open workouts eery Monday and every Wednesday at 7:00 PM at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 2nd Street South, Arlington VA 22204 -- the same venue as our youth track & field program. The training sessions are always 10 repeats of (200-meter run + 200-meter walk-and-talk), numerous enough to be useful for distance runners but fast enough to be helpful for sprinters. We have a committed core of six adults, and now that Young Flyers is over for the season, we hope some of our young athletes will join us for the twice-weekly practice. (No workouts on Mondays, December 25 or January 1 -- Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!) See www.pvtc.org/workouts
We also encourage you to enter your young athletes in PVTC's indoor track meets on Sundays, January 14, January 28, and February 11, starting at 6:00 PM, with a schedule of events similar to our track meet yesterday:
EVENTS and approximate start times:
In all previous years, we held the indoor
track meets on Sunday mornings, but with the construction on the west
isde of TJ this year severly limiting available parking, we gracefully
yielded Sunday mornings to Grace Community Church (www.trygrace.org) which meets at TJ's
auditorium. We expect to be back to Sunday mornings in
2019. Thank you for understanding.
(The relays are not on the official schedule, but we may be able to squeeze in one heat of 4x200m and 4x400m relays.)
I also want to invite you to 2018 USATF Masters Track & Field Championships, March 16-18, 2018, directed this year by PVTC at Prince George's Sportplex in Landover MD. Adults aged 30 to 105 from all over the USA will compete representing their clubs. PVTC won the USATF Masters Indoor Championships team award in 2013 at Prince George's Sportplax and again in 2015 at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem NC, and we want to win again in 2018. With your help, we can do that. You can run for or walk or throw or jump for PVTC, and we especially need relay teammates. Your services are urgently requested! For complete information, please see www.pvtc.org/2018nationals and www.pvtc.org/2018card.pdf
Also on Sunday, I mentioned a new one-mile race that I shall direct on Sunday, December 24, at 12:00 noon, at Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant, 1621 South Walter Reed Drive, Arlington VA 22204. If you or your young athlete enjoy the one-mile distance, we have a flat, historically-interesting course for you, preceded by buna (Ethiopian coffee, for the adults) and followed by injera (traditional Ethiopian flatbread and exotic toppings). The race benefits Mary Joy Development Association, an Ethiopian-American charity. For complete information, please see www.safetyandhealthfoundation.org/maryjoy
We were grateful for the opportunity to coach your young athlete and to work with you this season, and we look forward to running with you in the future!
Thank you, Jay Jacob Wind, secretary
Potomac Valley Track Club
