200 KIDS, 150 ADULTS ENJOY LAST DCRRC TRACK MEET
OF 1999 INDOOR SEASON

    We never thought we would see the day that a female runner would outduel the redoubtable Ted Poulos in a 3000-meter race, but today it happened.
    Victoria Lynch, 25, of Washington DC ran 10:09 to finish 7th overall, one place and six seconds ahead of Poulos, 37, of McLean, who ran more than 220 races in 1997 to earn a place in the Guiness Book of Records.
    Overall winner in the 3K was the Barefoot Brazilian, Eron Ferreira, 27, of Alexandria VA, who outkicked Rob Walker, 31, of Silver Spring MD to win by two seconds in 9:20.
    The mile race got a little confused, as race officials deviated from the published schedule and clumped masters (40+) milers together with elite (sub-5:00) milers. To make up for their error, they held an extra masters mile between the 400-meter and 800-meter races. Since many of the masters had given it their all earlier, Yvon LeDain45, of Chevy Chase MD, took the opportunity to win in 5:15. "Thirty years ago," said LeDain, "I ran 4:15. I lost just two seconds per year."
    Two hours earlier, Walker won the elite mile in 4:35, five seconds ahead of Steve Nearman. Michael Young, 11, of Somerset MD and Jessica Neal, 13, of Washington DC nearly tied to win the children's mile in 6:04. To win the women's mile in 5:35, Joy Parker, 18, of Upper Marlboro MD had to jump over Jenn Avensa of Loyola College, who tumbled just before the finish line. Joyce Adams, 45, of Sterling VA was first master's woman in 5:58. Ricardo Iracks, 16, of Washington DC won the high school/open mile in 5:01.
    Steve Pecinovsky, 44, of Fairfax VA won the 3000 meter racewalk at 12:27. KeJanah Rice, 13, of Riverdale MD "walked" away with the children's 800 meter racewalk in a time of 3:15.
    More than 200 kids and 150 adults enjoyed the last of three 1999 winter indoor track meets conducted by D.C. Road Runners Club ( DCRRC) and Potomac Valley Track Club (PVTC).
    This was the final meet in DCRRC's three-meet series. The meet started at 8:00 a.m. and featured racewalks of 800 meters for kids and 3000 meters for adults, followed by runs of 55 meters, one mile, 400 meters, 800 meters, 200 meters, and 3000 meters. The meet was directed by DCRRC and PVTC in co-operation with Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources and sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports, Nike Sports, and Runners World Magazine. The meet was free for children up thru 8th grade, and every young finisher got a Nike water bottle, courtesy of Nike representative Ry Benavides.
    Volunteers included Tim Baker, Sal Corrallo, Larry Dickerson, Ed McGaffigan, Ari Guttman, Rolland Elliott, Fred Gedrich, Ed Grant, Terry Hamilton, Tammy Huck, Gardenia Pittman, Charles Priddee, Don Riggs, Susan Rizzieri, James Scarborough, Mark Shinn, meet director Jay Jacob Wind, Jean and Mil Wood, Pamela Wusthof, and many other timers.
