When the top four runners in the 5K turned around after 2.5K at at Potomac Valley Track Club's Easter Classic 5K and 10K in Belle Haven Park VA on Saturday, March 26, 2005, John Haubert, 62, of Alexandria VA, suddenly inherited the lead in the accompanying 10K, followed by Jay Wind, 55, of Arlington VA. The two ran together for a mile before Wind pulled ahead to win in 45:17 on the rain-slippery course, his first 10K win since 1999, in 45:17, with Haubert 10 seconds back in 45:27.
Meanwhile, Mike Mahoney, 46, played on age vs. beauty, taking first in the 5K in 17:31, ahead of Tim Miller, 41, of Springfield VA, second in 19:02.
Among women, Sarah Buckheit, 44, of Reston VA, went with the leaders and held on strong to win the 5K in 24:06, and Lucia Alzaga, 29, of Alexandria VA, overcame a fall at the turnaround to win in 49:04.
